Now that we are entering the holiday season, treats are bound to be around the office. This means that the refrigerator may be working overtime due to crowding. We are going to focus on how best to clean the refrigerator and how often.
Regular deep cleaning is crucial in keeping the amounts of germs down and preventing the spread of germs. In between deep cleanings, there are small steps you can take to reduce the dirt and germs.
Areas of Concern
Shelves/Door Shelves – Food may sit on these shelves for weeks and go untouched. Due to this, containers may start to leak.
Drawers – Food is put inside and often forgotten. Due to this, it could spoil and cause mold or other germs to grow.
Handles/Knobs – Often missed while cleaning, these surfaces are touched frequently and can also hold germs and bacteria.
Cleaning Tips
Refrigerators need regular purging and clean outs. Foods do have an expiration date so it is a good idea to go through the refrigerator weekly to throw away anything that has expired or gone bad.
While purging, it is a good idea to wipe shelves, door shelves and handles with a food safe anti-bacterial spray. Any spills that occur should be wiped right away to avoid the risk of cross-contamination or other germs.
Seasonally or quarterly, do a deep clean of the refrigerator. Take everything out and check expiration dates. Also check containers to make sure they are not leaking. If possible, remove all shelves/door shelves and wash in a dishwasher or hot soapy water. Make sure everything is dry before returning to the refrigerator.
