The microwave is one appliance in offices that works around the clock. However, think about how often this handy appliance is cleaned! If you think about the microwave in your workplace, what words come to mind? Slimy, dirty, smelly?

Regular deep cleaning is crucial to help keep the microwave in excellent working condition. While food is cooking, it can spill over and if not cleaned up quickly, can become a breeding ground for germs. In between deep cleanings, there are small steps you can take to prevent that workplace microwave from resembling a science experiment.

Areas of Concern

Turntable/Glass plate – when food or liquids spill over, if they are not probably cleaned, they will sit on this plate and harden (making them harder to remove later). This can cause future germs and smells inside the microwave.

Inside top of the microwave – Have you ever cooked something and have it “explode”? Well all those food particles go up! The inside walls of the microwave need to be wiped down as well.

Handles/Knobs – Frequently missed while cleaning, these surfaces are touched often and can also hold germs and bacteria.

Cleaning Tips

Wiping the microwave out after spills or explosive food, will help reduce the number of germs and prolong the effectiveness of deep cleans. When a spill is noticed, wipe with a damp wipe cloth to remove the residue.

If food has hardened onto the inside top of the microwave or the walls, you can loosen that before wiping down. Place a bowl of water, with lemon, lime or a small amount of vinegar into the microwave. Heat the water until steaming and boiling. Allow the water to cool before removing. Any stuck-on food should now be loose enough to be wiped away!

To remove any leftover food odors, you can microwave a bowl of water with lemon. Heat the water until steaming and allow to sit for a few minutes to cool. Not only will the lemon deodorize the microwave but it will help sanitize as well.

Remember to wipe down as often as possible while in use and deep clean twice a month!
