When we think of our home, we want a place that is warm and inviting. We also want to have a healthy home. We take care of our home by regularly cleaning bathrooms, kitchens, floors, etc. However, there are some surfaces that are hosts of germs that we miss in our regular cleaning!
Germs:
Most homeowners try to stay on top of cleaning surfaces like counters, toilets, sinks, etc. Yet, there are other surfaces touched daily that are not being cleaned as often as they should. Most of the germs on these surfaces are due to improper hand washing techniques but can also occur from coughing, sneezing or food/drink:
- TV Remote
- Refrigerator handle
- Toothbrush
- Light Switches
- Oven Knobs
- Computer keyboard
- Shower curtain
- Coffee Maker
- Kitchen sponges
What can you do to help?
First and foremost, the biggest thing you can do is wash your hands! Make sure you are washing your hands for at least 20 seconds using soap and warm water. Especially make sure you are washing hands after coughing, sneezing or handling raw food.
Most of the dirtiest places are easy to clean! Keep disinfectant wipes nearby and occasionally wipe down these surfaces. Use a new wipe for each new surface to help prevent transferring germs. Items like kitchen sponges and toothbrushes should be replaced regularly.
Wiping the surfaces above weekly will keep them clean and help prevent the spread of germs. During cold and flu season, make sure to disinfect these surfaces often!
