March is National Poison Prevention Month. According to Cincinnati Children’s hospital, 90% of poisonings happen in the home. These poisonings occur due to improperly stored, labeled or mixed chemicals. This month we will explore cleaners/chemicals never to mix to help prevent future accidents or poisonings
Many people are now using the internet and other resources to create their own cleaning materials. Natural cleaners are the trend and many may say healthier for families. However, there are some natural cleaners that should NEVER be mixed!
- Ammonia and Bleach – Combining these two chemicals creates toxic vapors that when inhaled can cause respiratory and throat issues.
- Bleach and Vinegar – Combining these two chemicals creates toxic fumes that can cause chemical burns in your lungs and eyes.
- Hydrogen Peroxide & Vinegar – You can use these 2 cleaners on the same surface, but do not mix in the same container! Combining these two chemicals creates a corrosive acid that can be harmful to skin, eyes, nose and lungs.
- Bleach and Rubbing Alcohol – Combining these two products creates chloroform. When you are exposed to low levels of chloroform you may become dizzy or nauseous. Higher levels can lead to damage of the nervous system, eyes, lungs, skin, liver, kidneys, etc..
What Can I Do?
- Make sure all cleaning supplies and chemicals are properly labeled.
- Keep chemicals out of the reach of children. Either on a high shelf, locked in a closet, or use child proof locks for your cabinets.
- Read the labels of store-bought cleaners to make sure you aren’t mixing chemicals unknowingly (For example: Windex contains ammonia)
- Many natural products are good household cleaners alone. For example, bleach by itself is an effective cleaner to disinfect surfaces. However, if you are going to make your own natural cleaners, follow recipes from reputable sources such as the one below: https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/cleaning/tips/a24885/make-at-home-cleaners/
