Cleaning is a task that needs to be done regularly. Regular cleanings can help keep our households and workplaces more efficient and healthier. Last month was national poison control month and Octagon Building Care tackled the topic of which cleaners never to mix. This month, we talk about how to properly store cleaners and cleaning supplies for prolonged use and safety purposes.
Storage Tips
- Check Labels – Many cleaners may require special handling and storage so make sure to read the labels and follow any storage suggestions.
- Keep away from children and pets – Store cleaning supplies and materials out of reach of children and pets. If you are unable to store these chemicals up high, make sure that your cabinets are locked or secured.
- Check temperatures – Many cleaners and chemical suggest you store them somewhere with stable temperatures (no extreme heat or cold). Make sure your storage area is room temperature, dry and well ventilated. Keep in mind fluctuating temperatures in garages and sheds throughout the year.
- Do Not store cleaners/chemical near food/dishes/utensils.
- Use Health and Safety warning signs where appropriate.
- Store brooms and brushes upside down to prevent bristles from getting bent.
- Store sponges where they can dry – Sponges need to dry completely between uses. If not, mold and mildew can build up which hinders future cleanings.
What Can I do?
- Make sure all cleaning supplies and chemicals are properly labeled.
- DO NOT remove labels. Labels provide valuable information that you don’t want to lose as long as you are using the cleaner/chemical.
- Keep cleaners in their original containers. If you make your own cleaners, make sure they are in a proper storage container and properly labeled. Refer to our blog post on cleaners never to mix to avoid accidents!
- Throw expired cleaners/chemicals out. Check your cleaners and chemicals regularly to make sure you are not using products that may potentially have gone bad.
